Becoming Cyborg was a 5-session class on technological embodiment. It took place at Prospect Park in the sticky, firefly-filled evenings of June & July 2025.

Lobodesis

by amber pedersen

A cyborg ritual. A reverse lobotomy(!).

Re-membering our faculties in 5 Simple Steps.

To be practiced with the aid of the unearthed metals and minerals we carry in our phones, whenever you sense an imbalance in the energy between yourself and your device. It can also be practiced as an alternative to Google Search when you have a question. Frequency can be proportional to the rate of your normative phone use.

We call on the ancestors in the earth below us to help us properly hold these precious metals as such, and to seek right, reciprocal relationship with them. Kite, in “Making Kin With the Machine” shares:

We also call on the long traditions and teachings of head carrying, which platforms alignment, strength, and daily bodily integration of movements over domesticated “exercise routines”

Seeking balance in the somatic experience of cyborgian relationship, invite your phone to become an aide to mind-full remembrance and repair of your body— especially of your head-neck-spinal alignment, your environment, and to reenchantment with your unsevered attention.

Allow the weighted matter of your phone to bring awareness the weight of your body on the earth, and recall your positionality as the inbetween of the earth and its precious stones. With your phone’s placement at the crown chakra, you can also choose to explore any questions related to your intention, imagining a joining of individual and universal consciousness, of Ancient Intelligences.

Materials:

Phone (with case, preferrably)

Anti-slip headband, inverted (optional)
  1. Declare an intention for the duration of the practice
  2. Bow In
  3. Place your phone on the top of your head, using the headband if desired.
  4. Move through your day, keeping your phone in balance on your head
  5. Bow Out, returning your phone to your line of sight with gratitude

Notice what shifts— in your body, in your perception, in your relationship with the world.

Note what feels good, and what doesn’t.

Did the phone feel heavy? Light? How about its texture? How did your body respond?

Continue moving through your day using your phone in this way as needed. Graduate to other devices as practice, relationship, and confidence with your phone solidifies. Share with another cyborg in your life.
